Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on the 18th of July 1994, grew up in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was the daughter of a black man and a white mom. She was raised primarily with her mom's family. Russell recalled how as a child she felt unaccepted by her peers because of the complexion of her skin. They struggled with financial issues. They were always moving and moved sixteen times in order to assist her father's career. Despite all this, Russell mentioned how in her younger days "there was always a chance for innovation, to design something new."As as a young person, Russell was already artistically inclined. At first, she would like to pursue a career in ballet. She later wanted to become a painter. It was when she was 18 that she started her first acting class. She took money from her job to purchase an automobile and travel to Los Angeles to audition. If her funds ran out then she would go back home to work until she earned enough to go back to the audition. The routine continued for four years, until she was given her first TV role.
